Residential zero & low carbon homes

Low carbon homes and zero carbon homes are government classifications which are intended for use in assessing rates etc.

At present it does not affect the amount of rates that you pay, but it may do in the future.

A low carbon Home is calculated and certified using approved software.

It assesses two main areas:-

As you can see this is an achievable classification but really needs to be sorted out at the design stage, as it is difficult to upgrade the insulation qualities of a house once its built.

Zero carbon homes are calculated using similar approved software. This requires a highly insulated dwelling and also has to compensate for any carbon emissions from the house. This is done by generating renewable energy of some sort to offset the energy used by the home. This is difficult to achieve and will require considerable efforts to achieve, but it will give the greatest benefits in the long term.
